The Rotary Club of Harlingen was invited by the Rotary Club of Monterrey Obispado to deliver 120 bicycles to the schools around Dr. Arroyo in Southern Nuevo Leon State on 4 September. On 5 September they went to El Salto, where they delivered 80 bicycles and 26 computers and printers to the school around Zaragoza. They were hosted by Humberto Criollos, President of Monterrey Obispado and Dr. Bonifacio Aguillar. The bicycles are given to students who live more than three kilometers from the school. In order to qualify to receive one, the student’s parents must sign a paper stating that the student must remain in school until graduation. After five years, the Monterrey Obispado Club has donated 2000 bicycles.

In addition to the computers that the Monterrey Obispado club donated, the Rotary Club of Harlingen donated six more used computers to one school that did not receive any. They were donated by Jo Liston of Go with Jo Tours.

The History of the Rotary Club of Harlingen is out and available to any Rotarian interested in our history. It has been in the making and compiling of information by S. Frances Burns, Rotarian, for several years. After it’s complition, Pres. Bill Reagan printed it, put it in loose leaf form, and now has it available to any Rotarian who would like a copy. It is in loose leaf format for one very good reason—addition chapters can be added as new Presidents come aboard. The cost is Free–or a donation to St. Paul Lutheran Church, as St. Paul supplied the means of printing it. Give your donation to Pres. Bill Reagan who will see that it is donated to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Accolades to Frances Burns for her magnificent effort and to St. Paul’s and Rev. Bill Reagan for seeing that it is published.”

Theresa and I attended the Paul Harris dinner . . .

Theresa and I attended the Paul Harris dinner in Corpus Christi this past Saturday. The Paul Harris dinner is Rotary’s birthday party. 125 Rotarians from all of our clubs met to hear Cameron Chisholm speak about the importance of his experience as a Rotary Peace Scholar for his work at the World Bank. A very articulate and ambitious young man, we were impressed to learn of the importance of this great Rotary Program in areas of conflict around the world.

Our own John Hollingsworth was recognized for his contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Rotary International Attendance Policy states that a member who misses 4 consecutive meetings has “rotated out” of Rotary. What to do if this happens to you? The world does not end! You will, however, need to submit a request to the board of directors requesting reinstatement into the club. This can be done by mail to Rotary Club of Harlingen, P.O. Box 1987, Harlingen, Tx 78551 or by e-mail to Bill Reagan at billreagan@att.net. Call Bill at 423-3924 if you have any questions.

To avoid this, you can makeup two weeks before or two weeks after any miss or expected miss. Even if you’ve missed 4 in a row, you still can make up your 4th miss up to 2 weeks after. We are on the honor system when it comes to make-ups, so if you see that your make-up has not been recorded, then you can mark the appropriate day with a X on our sign-in sheet.

Ways you can make up

Attend a meeting of another Rotary Club. Local meetings are listed in your bulletin or on www.rotaryharlingen.org under the FAQ section. You can even make up when you are out of town. Most meetings are listed at the www.rotary.org site.

Attend a Rotary Board Meeting – Currently our Board of Directors meets the first Tuesday of the month at11:30 a.m. at St. Paul Church in the conference room.

www.rotaryeclubone.org – Make up online!

Attend a Harlingen Rotary Club committee meeting or volunteer at a Harlingen Rotary Club function.
