Our foreign exchange student, Manoelle Bailly, comes from Belgium. We’re very happy to have her with us in Harlingen this year. Manoelle represents her country, Rotary in Belgium and Rotary in Harlingen.
The Rotary Club of Harlingen was invited by the Rotary Club of Monterrey Obispado to deliver 120 bicycles to the schools around Dr. Arroyo in Southern Nuevo Leon State on 4 September. On 5 September they went to El Salto, where they delivered 80 bicycles and 26 computers and printers to the school around Zaragoza. They were hosted by Humberto Criollos, President of Monterrey Obispado and Dr. Bonifacio Aguillar. The bicycles are given to students who live more than three kilometers from the school. In order to qualify to receive one, the student’s parents must sign a paper stating that the student must remain in school until graduation. After five years, the Monterrey Obispado Club has donated 2000 bicycles.
In addition to the computers that the Monterrey Obispado club donated, the Rotary Club of Harlingen donated six more used computers to one school that did not receive any. They were donated by Jo Liston of Go with Jo Tours.
Thanks, Ron Burgamy, for a great evening of Rotary fellowship. Next Rotary Make Up Happy Hour is March 26th.
Theresa and I attended the Paul Harris dinner in Corpus Christi this past Saturday. The Paul Harris dinner is Rotary’s birthday party. 125 Rotarians from all of our clubs met to hear Cameron Chisholm speak about the importance of his experience as a Rotary Peace Scholar for his work at the World Bank. A very articulate and ambitious young man, we were impressed to learn of the importance of this great Rotary Program in areas of conflict around the world.
Our own John Hollingsworth was recognized for his contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
